It all started with two piglets, who grew and grew! These became the founding members of our free range pig herd, and before we knew it, a merry tribe of 30 or so pigs were making themselves at home in the grassy paddocks of the lower south east corner of South Australia (and occasionally enjoying the lawn of our garden)!
We were feeding them grain we also grew on the farm as part of our mixed cropping program and the concept of value adding to this grain, combined with the pigs’ obvious preference for running free, sparked the idea of establishing a free range piggery on a larger scale.
We refined our breeding program to contain only purebred Berkshire pigs, a black heritage breed well-suited to the outdoors that produce sweet, full-flavoured pork – and so Beachport Berkshires was born! Now, more than 140 Berkshire sows and their offspring meander through our paddocks.
We attained Australian Pork Industry Quality Assurance (APIQ) Free Range Certification in 2017 and work hard to ensure the highest standards of animal and environmental welfare to create delicious pork.
Supplying our local community with high quality produce has always been a key goal for us, so we’re very proud to close the gap between farmers and retailers and have our pork sold locally in Millicent, Beachport and Mount Gambier, as well as appearing on the menu at many Limestone Coast restaurants. We also supply a number of boutique butchers in Melbourne and Adelaide, with our own pork processing facility opening in Beachport soon.
